A New Business Model with Ancient Roots
The title of this book springs from my belief that business can be a powerful transforming force for the greater good. It embodies the old-fashioned notion of doing well by doing good. (People say of Quakers that they came to Philadelphia to do good and ended up doing well.)

Spirituality has many faces. For some, it is trust in God and in the basic human nature to do the right thing. A deep sense of Oneness, kinship with all humanity. For others, it may be transcending the limits of what is known. The words spirit and spirituality come from the Latin root spirare meaning breath or inspiration.

Entrepreneur, from the Latin and French roots, is one who seizes the moment and undertakes risks in creating a new enterprise.

Does spirituality have a place in business?

Yes. As you will see from The TELUS Mobility Story, the spiritual principles in this book can succeed in the “real world.” The power of these principles is in their practice.

Spiritual entrepreneuring is expressed through what I call the S-element. The S-element symbolizes what you Stand for, what makes you Stand out. It is through the power of the S-connection that companies gain lasting competitive advantage.

Whether you are an individual entrepreneur or a global corporation, the essence of spiritual entrepreneuring is the same:
• Do Well by Doing Good
• Profit with Purpose.

The Honeybee and the Peacock

The Honeybee and the Peacock personify two paradigms of business. The bee goes in search of nectar and pollinates by hopping from flower to flower. Honey is the goal. Pollination and benefits to plants (customers) are incidental byproducts.

The peacock, with its magnificent plumage and its exotic dance, choreographs its intrinsic nature. “Customers” are attracted by the spectacle and partake of the joy.

The peacock, by its alluring performance, attracts partners and increases the prospects of its immortality. The bee makes a living and may be content in its own ways. But isn’t the life of the peacock more joyful?

Entrepreneurs and companies succeed when they combine the fun element of the peacock with the persistence of the bee, the power of Profit with the power of Purpose.

What is Success? What do you Want, really?

Perhaps money, lots of it, comes to mind. And some afterthoughts as well.

This is what Ralph Waldo Emerson said about success: “To laugh often and much… to leave the world a bit better… because you have lived.”

In business as in personal life, we want to know what we want, our purpose. We want to make a difference. We want to work with companies whose purpose reaches beyond making money. It is this sense of purpose that sets individuals and organizations apart. Ideas alone are not enough. We need ideals. In the next chapter, see how the change of only one word in the vision statement of a respected research laboratory transforms its mission from an idea to an ideal.

Lest we forget, corporations are made up of people. Ultimately, what matters most is not so much the result as the cause. At the deepest level, as Homo sapiens (wise mankind), we want to know who we are and experience the joy of being who we are.

Be my Self. Be your Self. Express our Selves.
Work right. Laugh often.

Personally, how do you feel about success?
